Day 2 Tracks in the Snow: Following God's Guidance Through the Signs He Leaves
There's something magical about the morning after a fresh snowfall, especially for a hunter. The world feels brand new, pristine and unmarked, yet paradoxically, it reveals everything. Where yesterday the forest floor held its secrets close, today it's an open book written in tracks and trails. As a hunter, you know this feeling well — that moment when you step into the woods and realize that nature has given you a gift. The snow is your guide, your teacher, your map to understanding what moves through these woods and where it's heading.
But as I've spent more time in the field, I've come to realize that this experience as a hunter mirrors something far deeper and more profound about our spiritual lives. God, too, leaves tracks for us to follow. He marks our path with signs and guidance, though often in ways so subtle and quiet that we miss them entirely if we're not paying close attention.
God's Guidance Through Signs
The promise found in Isaiah 30:21 speaks directly to this truth: "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'" This verse has always resonated with me, but it wasn't until I was tracking game through fresh snow that its full meaning crystallized in my mind.
When you're a hunter studying tracks in the snow, you're engaging in an ancient practice of reading signs. You crouch down, examining each impression carefully. You note the direction the animal was traveling, the pattern of its gait, the depth of each print. Was it walking casually or running in fear? How fresh are these tracks? Were there others with it, or was it alone? Every detail matters. Every mark tells a story. And if you're paying attention — truly paying attention — those signs can lead you directly into the presence of what you're seeking.
This is exactly how God works in our lives, though we often fail to recognize it. God leaves tracks too. He marks the path before us, though not always in the way we expect or hope for. His signs aren't neon lights flashing in the darkness. They're not billboards or announcements. Instead, they're subtle, quiet impressions on the surface of our lives — like tracks pressed into fresh snow.
Learning to Read God's Tracks
Think about the signs God leaves in your daily life. A conversation with a friend that stirs something deep within your soul. A verse from Scripture that lands heavier than expected, as if God Himself whispered it directly into your ear. A door that closes unexpectedly, or one that opens without any logical explanation. A persistent thought that won't leave you alone. A feeling of peace or unease that guides your decisions. These are His tracks in the snow.
The challenge, however, is that most of us move through life too quickly to notice them. We're rushing from one thing to the next, our minds cluttered with worries and distractions, our eyes fixed on the destination rather than the path beneath our feet. A hunter knows better. A hunter understands that speed is the enemy of awareness. If you want to see the tracks, you have to slow down. You have to be intentional. You have to quiet your mind and sharpen your senses.
The same principle applies to our spiritual lives. Isaiah 30:21 promises that you'll hear God's voice saying, "This is the way; walk in it." But to hear His voice, you must slow down. To follow His guidance, you must watch closely. To recognize His tracks, you must be willing to pause and examine the signs He's placed before you.
The more time you spend in the woods as a hunter, the more your eye learns to see. What looks like random marks in the snow to a novice becomes a detailed narrative to an experienced tracker. You begin to recognize the subtle differences between species, between males and females, between young and old. Your senses sharpen. Your intuition develops. The woods begin to speak to you in a language you've learned to understand.
The same is true with the Holy Spirit. The more time you spend in prayer, in Scripture, in quiet reflection and meditation on God's presence, the more attuned you become to His voice. You begin to recognize His guidance in the small moments. You learn to distinguish between your own desires and His leading. You develop a spiritual sensitivity that allows you to see His tracks even when they're faint.
When the Trail Seems Empty
But what about those times when the woods feel empty? What about those seasons when the trail is unclear and you can't seem to find any tracks at all? Every hunter knows these moments. You've been out since before dawn, you've covered miles of territory, and you've found nothing. The snow is there, but it's unmarked. The silence feels heavy. Doubt creeps in. Maybe the game has moved on. Maybe you're looking in the wrong place. Maybe you should give up and go home.
This is where faith becomes essential. This is where the hunter's patience and persistence become spiritual disciplines.
Maybe today you're unsure of your direction. Maybe the woods of your life feel empty and the trail unclear. Maybe you've been praying for guidance and hearing nothing but silence. Maybe you've been waiting for a sign from God and nothing seems to be coming. In these moments, it's easy to lose hope. It's easy to assume that God has abandoned you or that you're somehow not worthy of His guidance.
But pause. Look again. The tracks are there. They may not be where you expected them to be. They may not lead where you thought they would lead. They may require you to trust in a direction that doesn't make sense to your rational mind. But they are there. God's guidance is always present, even when we can't see it clearly.
Walking in Step with God
The beauty of following God's tracks is that they always lead to Him. Even when the path is unclear, even when we don't understand where we're going, we can trust that if we're following His signs, we're moving in the right direction. We're walking toward truth, toward love, toward peace, toward the very heart of God.
As a hunter, you understand the importance of reading signs and following them with precision. You know that your success depends on your ability to interpret the tracks before you and trust your instincts. You know that patience, attention to detail, and persistence are essential. These same qualities are essential in our spiritual lives.
God is calling you to slow down. He's inviting you to pay closer attention to the signs He's leaving for you. He's asking you to trust His guidance even when you can't see the entire path ahead. He's promising that if you listen carefully, you'll hear His voice saying, "This is the way; walk in it."
The tracks are there. Will you take the time to see them?
A Prayer for the Journey
Lord, I want to see the signs You leave for me. So often I move too fast, or I look for something louder, clearer, flashier than what You actually provide. But You speak in footprints — in quiet moments, in stirred hearts, in whispers I barely hear. You leave Your tracks in the snow of my life, and I want to learn to read them.
Help me slow down. Teach me to read the signs of Your presence. To trust the direction You're leading, even if I don't know where the trail ends. Let me walk in step with You, following the tracks of peace, love, and truth. Give me the patience of a hunter, the wisdom to discern Your voice from all the other voices clamoring for my attention, and the courage to follow where You lead.
You are the guide I trust. I'll follow where You lead. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
