Day 4 - The Hunt Begins in the Heart

SCRIPTURE (1 SAMUEL 16:7)

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Before the boots hit the ground, before the gear is loaded, before the sun breaks over the ridgeline, the hunt begins. But not where you think. It begins in the heart, in the why. Why you're out there. Why you pursue the animal. Why you return to the wild again and again, season after season, drawn by something you can't quite name but can't ignore.

For some hunters, it's the harvest. The goal is clear: fill the freezer, provide for the family, take home meat that will sustain your loved ones through the winter months. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, there's something deeply honorable about it—the responsibility of providing, the connection between the hunter and the hunted, the understanding that life feeds on life in this world we inhabit.

For others, it's the solitude. The chance to escape the noise, the demands, the endless notifications and obligations that fill our modern lives. Out in the wild, there's a simplicity that's hard to find anywhere else. It's just you, the land, and the rhythm of nature. No emails. No meetings. No one asking anything of you except the land itself, and what it asks is honest and straightforward.

But for many, it's something deeper still. Something that defies easy explanation. It's a connection to creation itself, a sense of providence, a feeling that you're touching something sacred when you're out there in the early morning or the fading light of evening. It's the recognition that you're part of something larger than yourself, woven into the fabric of a world that was here long before you and will continue long after you're gone.

And here's the thing that matters most: God sees it all. He sees your heart. He knows your why before you even fully understand it yourself.

Purity of Intention

Scripture tells us something profound in 1 Samuel 16:7: "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

This verse comes from the story of David. Before David ever held a crown, before he ever stood before Goliath with nothing but a sling and five smooth stones, God saw his heart. Everyone else around him saw a shepherd boy. His own father didn't even think to bring him when the prophet Samuel came looking for the next king of Israel. But God saw something different. God saw a king. Not because of David's appearance or his accomplishments or his credentials, but because of what was in his heart.

This is the principle that transforms everything about how we approach our pursuits, whether we're hunting in the mountains or working in our careers or serving in our communities. God doesn't measure a man by the notches in his belt or the success of his pursuit. He doesn't care how many animals you've harvested or how impressive your trophy room looks. He measures you by your motives. He looks at the why behind the what.

In hunting, as in life, your heart determines your direction. You can do all the right things for the wrong reasons and still come up empty. You can follow all the best practices, use all the right gear, scout the perfect location, and execute a flawless stalk, but if your heart is driven by pride or ego or the need to prove something to someone else, you'll find that the victory feels hollow. There's no satisfaction in it. The meat in the freezer doesn't taste as good. The story doesn't feel as meaningful when you tell it around the campfire.

But when your heart is right, even the days you "fail" become full of purpose. Even the hunts where you don't harvest an animal can be rich with meaning and connection and spiritual significance. Because the real hunt was never just about the animal. The real hunt was always about what happens inside you when you're out there, stripped down to essentials, facing the reality of creation and your place in it.

Examining Your Motives

So here's the hard question that each of us needs to ask ourselves: What's driving you today? What's really driving you?

Is it pride? The desire to be seen as a successful hunter, to have a reputation, to be known as someone who can get it done? Is it pressure? The expectation of others, the feeling that you need to prove your worth through your accomplishments? Is it about proving something—to your father, to your peers, to yourself? These are real motivations that live in real hearts, and they're not necessarily evil, but they're not the foundation you want to build your life on.

Or is it peace? Humility? Wonder? Are you hunting just to fill the freezer, or are you also seeking to meet God in the stillness? Are you out there to provide, yes, but also to listen? To observe? To let the quiet of creation speak to your soul?

The truth is, most of us are a mixture. We're not purely motivated by one thing or another. We want the harvest and the solitude. We want to provide and to experience something transcendent. We want to be seen as capable and to feel connected to something larger than ourselves. That's human. That's normal.

But God isn't asking for perfection. He's not standing over you with a checklist, waiting for you to get your motives 100 percent pure before He'll accept you or bless you. He's asking for honesty. He's asking you to look at your heart and acknowledge what's really there. He's asking you to invite Him into the examination process.

The Sacred in the Ordinary

When your heart is aligned with His, even a quiet walk in the woods becomes holy ground. You don't need a dramatic conversion or a mountaintop experience. You don't need to feel some overwhelming spiritual presence. Sometimes the sacred is found in the simple act of paying attention, of being present, of recognizing that you're standing in creation and creation speaks of the Creator.

The hunter who walks through the forest with a humble heart, grateful for the opportunity, aware of the privilege of being there, present to the moment—that hunter is on holy ground. The fisherman who sits by the stream and feels the weight of the world lift from his shoulders, who finds peace in the rhythm of casting and waiting—that fisherman is in a sacred space. The person who steps outside and looks up at the stars and feels small and connected and part of something vast and beautiful—that person is experiencing something divine.

This is what it means to begin the hunt in the heart. It means getting your why right before you ever get your how right. It means examining your motives and aligning them with something bigger than yourself. It means recognizing that the real pursuit is always spiritual, always about your relationship with God and with creation and with truth.

A Spiritual Application

Before you pursue any goal—whether it's a hunting season, a career move, a relationship, a dream you've been holding—invite God to examine your motives. Ask Him to show you what's really driving you. A right heart can turn even ordinary obedience into worship. A right heart can make a simple day in the woods into a spiritual experience. A right heart can transform your entire approach to life.

A Prayer for the Journey

Lord, search my heart today. Reveal what's truly driving me. Strip away the performance, the pride, the pressure, and leave only what is good and true.

Teach me to begin every pursuit with intention. Let my motives be shaped by You. Whether in the wild or in my daily life, let my heart reflect love, reverence, and humility.

May my hunt never be about conquest, but connection with You, with creation, with truth.

And if I harvest nothing today but stillness, may it be enough.
